Facing the challenge of achieving a harmonious relationship with the landscape, in a site with privileged views, the design of the Afpel House was inspired by the old barns of the south by taking as reference its volumetry, materiality. Seeking to take advantage of the views of the terrain, the house was conceived as two perpendicular wings, in the shape of a "T".
The main branch is parallel to Lake Ranco, with a view to the east towards the south, and with a view to the mountain range in its northern orientation. Dominated by its transversality, it opens to both sides of the valley. This wing contains a large living room with a kitchen, where different programs can take place at the same time: having a coffee, reading a book or being by the fire. Looking for this condition of multiplicity of programs, furniture was designed in situ, linking the scale of the house as a whole to the interior.
Then, in this same volume in its western end is the master bedroom that connects to a small more private hill, located in front of the main bed. On the opposite end, there is a flexible space that is a barbecue area, a garage and a space to park the car.
The second arm contains four bedrooms on one side, while on the other side there are two bathrooms with shower and one without. In its perpendicular disposition, this section configures the access to the house, presenting a facade of small windows that are part of the bathrooms, but that are read as a radical horizontal line and rigorously modulated in equal parts, sometimes with a window, and others with a change of cladding.
As for the roof, it was designed with its highest point where the living room and kitchen are located, forming a vault in the center of the house, giving a special quality to the common space above the bedrooms, while towards the ends its height decreases, so that from the outside the volume can be read demurely.
The other facades follow a rhythm of masses and voids, which play a very important role in the composition of the house, varying in both heights and types of openings, to determine the character of the interior spaces. As they are circumscribed in metal plate frames, they acquire a certain autonomy with respect to the Patagonian oak walls and are constituted as elements that enhance the spatial qualities of the house.
